Zinc concentration was measured in plasma and erythrocytes and phosphorus in serum in 17 normal subjects and in 15 uremic patients. The values for both zinc and phosphorus in erythrocytes and serum were statistically lower in the uremic group. The low level of erythrocyte zinc in uremia may be due to either or both of the following reasons: a) enhanced erythrocyte metabolism of zinc, as suggested by decreased hematocrit, b) binding of zinc to serum proteins and diminished extraction into erythrocytes, or c) decreased incorporation of zinc into erythrocytes.Heterogeneous association of HER2/neu gene amplification and protein overexpression with EGFR and c-K-ras in non-small cell lung carcinomas.
The correlation of HER2/neu gene amplification with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and c-K-ras mutations was examined in non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC). Surgically resected specimens from 75 patients with NSCLC and matched histologically normal specimens from the same patient were analyzed. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue and subjected to fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with a HER2/neu probe. The DNA of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissues was extracted using a method modified from the Qiagen Paraffin Kit.
